Assam’s first female finance minister has been elected for the first time in Assam. In his government, newly elected Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over the Finance Department to Ajanta Neog, a former MLA from Golaghat five times. This department was last organized by Himanta Biswa Sarma in Sarbananda Sonowal’s government.
After taking charge in the Finance Department, Neogsaid that Chief Minister Sarma had announced on Monday after taking oath that the new government aims to make Assam one of the top five states in India in the next five years, and that goal Will work and plan accordingly. He said that Sarma was the Finance Minister in the previous government led by Sarbananda Sonowal and he did a lot to boost Assam’s economy.
Niog told the media, “Sarma excelled in the finance department and increased the revenue of the state. Therefore, it is my responsibility to carry forward their work for the all-round development of the state. ”

After being elected to the charge of Finance Minister, Niog said that it is a matter of great pleasure and pride for him. Thanking the honorable Chief Minister, he said that he is very thankful for this. After assuming office, he also told that the biggest challenge before him is to manage this epidemic of Covid-19.
Critics raise questions on being elected Assam’s finance minister
Questioning the election of Ajanta Niog, many people have misunderstood it because according to them, they do not have much experience in the finance department. To her critics, she said that she has previously worked in the Department of Public Works and with this she has gained basic understanding and knowledge for the Finance Department. Niog said that she is sure that she will learn a lot more while working.
Assam’s first woman finance minister is a law graduate
Ajanta Niog, 46, has completed her graduation in law from the University of Guwahati. In 1996, her husband Nageen Niog was murdered by the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). After this, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi gave him an opportunity to enter politics. She has also handled the Public Works Department in Tarun Gogoi’s government. An influential minister (2001-2016) in the previous Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government, Niog left the party before the March-April assembly elections to join the ruling BJP.
Ajanta Neog has been an MLA from Assam 5 times
Ajanta Neog has won the assembly elections 5 times from Golaghat itself. He contested the assembly for the first time in 2001 and defeated his opposition candidate by around 1000 votes. Since then, she has won elections from Golaghat every time and now also has the distinction of being the female legislator of Assam for the longest time. In December 2020, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and in the recently concluded assembly elections in Assam, he defeated his nearest Congress rival Bipupan Saikia by a margin of 9,325 votes.
